The theme of the Gospels is Jesus: Jesus, Son of God, Son of Man; Jesus, the Messiah of Israel, the Salvation of nations; Jesus, the King over the kingdom of heaven now come to earth. We are presented with four views of the God Man, as each author displays a particular aspect of something too large, in the end, to be fully comprehended. In Matthew we see what He said, in Mark what He did. Luke follows with an effort to make clear to us who He was, and John closes the quartet by explaining what His being means. One interesting note: it occurs to me this morning that every one of these books is an appeal to reason. There is no particular playing on the emotions going on, just a laying out of the facts and events with, perhaps, some explanation of their significance. It is an opportunity for every man to see the facts of the life of Jesus, and in those facts to see the facts of his own life. It is an opportunity to make an informed decision. Indeed, it is a bringing on of the crisis-point of decision, creating not just the opportunity but a necessity that one decide. With the Jews about whom we read in these books, we may be asking "Is He truly God, or is He but another man?" The answer from our Lord rings out: "I AM." Will you believe His answer?
